IBM to launch first SoftLayer data centre in Australia

By Nicholas Greene
SoftLayer, an IBMCompany, will strengthen its cloud presence in the Asia-Pacific region this month by launching its first Australian data centre, based in Melbourne.

The latest in a series of 15 new data centres IBM is investing $1.2 billion worldwide, the Melbourne data centre, which will have capacity for more than 15,000 physical servers, will meet Australian demand for secure, in-country enterprise cloud services for public, private and mixed cloud environments.

In June, IBM announced it had expanded its global partnership with SAP to deliver the SAP HANA platform, the SAP HANA ONE service and other SAP applications on the SoftLayer cloud platform.

A second SoftLayer data centre will open in Australia later this year, although the site for it has yet to be announced.

SoftLayer CEO Lance Crosby said, “Australia is an important market for IBM and SoftLayer. We are seeing a strong appetite for cloud in this market, particularly towards the hybrid cloud model.

“IBM’s ability to offer Australian businesses in-country access to SoftLayer’s global cloud infrastructure will further accelerate cloud adoption amongst a new breed of organisations that is constantly ready and responding to change.”

This is IBM’s second major play with SoftLayer in Australia of late – partnering with one of Australia’s largest IT distributors, Avnet Technology Solutions, to build a business network to deliver SoftLayer products to the market.
